30 Years of BYD Evolution Revolutionizing Electric Vehicles in the World

From battery maker, BYD quickly established itself as a leading safe and affordable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology company. BYD´s success in the EV market is this expertise. 

When BYD was one of the first companies to mass produce electric vehicles, models such as F3DM were among the first vehicles in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) portfolio, including passenger cars, buses, trucks, and trains. 

To date, BYD has expanded its footprint to more than 94 countries, and 400 major cities on six continents. Factories around the world, including in Asia Pacific, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia demonstrate BYD’s commitment to local production and global market growth.  

Despite this, BYD invests the money to develop EV technology. By August 2024, BYD will have 100,101 engineers and technicians in 11 research institutions to form the largest R&D team of an automaker in the world. 

The breakthroughs derived from this investment include a blade battery, the revolutionary e-Platform 3.0, and an advanced electric drive system. Just these achievements make us understand that Not only BYD is focusing on only one sector but they are always innovating and developing different technological solutions for a better future to come.

Between 2015 and 2017 was a golden time for BYD, when the company experienced a series of extraordinary achievements and cemented itself as the leader of the industry. 

Entering 2019, BYD has broken a series of important records in electric vehicle sales, entering 2020 BYD kicked off the world by launching a blade battery. It is a turning point in the industry and makes BYD a battery technology leader.  

Last year, BYD became the first Chinese manufacturing company to have sold more than 1 million NEV units globally in one year. With its introduction of battery technology lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), BYD has enabled a safe and effective solution for consumers. 

BYD took a bold and historic step by completely stopping the production of gasoline vehicles in 2022. This decision shows BYD’s total commitment to electric vehicles and hybrid, as well as marking a new era for the company. 

Also this year, BYD recorded a production achievement of more than 3 million NEV units globally. The phenomenal achievement of BYD surpasses Tesla to become the world’s top seller of electric vehicles. This is proof of BYD’s product excellence, win strategy, and global consumer credit.

In 2023, with a total of 3.02 million units of NEV sales, BYD will once again make a very big record as it is the world’s top electric vehicle manufacturer. This success can also be seen from BYD’s exports of 242,766 units in the same year, with an astonishing growth of 334.2%. 

Until 2024, BYD has recorded an extraordinary milestone by producing 10 million NEVs. This achievement confirms BYD’s commitment to sustainable development and makes it the first car manufacturer in the world to achieve this fantastic figure.

Even more impressive, BYD’s first 5 million NEVs took 15 years to produce, but it only took 15 months to produce the next 5 million NEVs. Now, BYD has again marked a historic moment in celebrating its 30th anniversary with the production of the 10 millionth new energy vehicle which was achieved in just over 2 months since the previous achievement of the 9 millionth NEV production.
